"I have known Dean Ottley for about 15 years. Before I retired I was a Senior Building Control Surveyor (Building Inspector) for the Isle of Wight Council, and inspected many of Dean’s jobs in Cowes and Newport. I was aware of his knowledge and capabilities as a builder, and also his skills in customer care, so when my wife and I wanted a builder to extend our lounge and kitchen, Dean was our first choice.

We had plans drawn by a local architect, and structural calculations for the steel beams produced by a local structural engineer. Planning permission was not required, as the size of the extension was within permitted development limits. Building Regulations Approval for the plans was obtained by the architect.

Dean gave us a written estimate of cost and an approximate timescale of four months, which we accepted. Work started in April 2017 and was completed on time and cost. During this time we decided to expand the scope of the work to include various internal and external alterations, and Dean helped us to choose suitable designs and materials for these. We were very happy with Dean’s work, and accepted his estimated prices for the additional jobs. We waited until he was able to fit these in between other jobs that he was already booked to do. He finished his last job for us in May 2018.

Dean and his team recently completed a full refurbishment on our bungalow that was in desperate need of some repairs and general modernisation. The work included damp-proofing and dry lining throughout, a new kitchen and bathroom, new plumbing and heating systems, a partial rewire, new pocket door systems for separating lounge/dining room, all-new wall and coving lights, and general redecoration throughout.

We moved out for about 4 months to enable the works to be undertaken, during which time Dean was on site almost every day, either working directly on the project or overseeing his team’s progress. He also co-ordinated with suppliers to make sure that materials arrived when needed so that progress was smooth and sure. He was in regular touch with us, always ensuring that we were kept up-to-date with progress and welcoming our input when there was to be any deviation from the initial mission brief. The ‘Dean team’ navigated with aplomb a couple of unexpected issues that arose during the course of the works, taking them all in their stride to still finish on schedule, allowing us to move back into our now beautiful home that has been utterly transformed. We would definitely use Dean’s services again and are more than happy to thoroughly recommend him to others.

Dean and 'H' recently built a hall extension at our house in Gurnard. They did a superb job and we are really pleased with it. We would highly recommend Dean for the quality of his work and also the way that they work which is very accommodating. They were perfectly happy to put up with our fussy requirements! Dean and H also laid a new engineered wood floor in our hall and did an excellent job of that as well!

Conversion Bathroom to Shower Room

Our somewhat tired bathroom has now been transformed into an attractive and functional shower room which does not fail to please. Our thanks to Dean for his eye to detail, knowledgeable advice and for taking the time to involve us in the choices that needed to made as the shower room took shape. The work was undertaken with the minimum of disturbance to ourselves and in a friendly and courteous manner at all times – thank you Dean. It made such a difference having a clean and tidy workspace at the end of the day. Would not hesitate to recommend Dean as a contractor who not only 'knows his stuff' but will deliver on what he has promised.

Dean and his team built us a garden office building of the highest quality. From the outset his communication and advice was first-class, and this was a hallmark of the entire project. His team were punctual, worked extremely hard, and kept us posted at every stage as to their progress. Dean's communication in particular is noteworthy, and he provided regular updates and information. The quality of the building is far in excess of anything we could have bought pre-fab, the standard of workmanship and attention to detail is exceptional, and we are delighted with the finished result. Dean and his team completed a garage conversion for us and it was finished to a very high standard and on time too. Dean kept us informed the whole time with progress and was happy to do extra bits and to make changes along the way so that the room was perfect for us. All the other tradesmen who were involved were very professional and Dean organised everyone at the right time so we didn't need to worry about a thing. Everyone involved was friendly and a pleasure to have working in our home. We would not look anywhere else for any future work.

BEST BUILDERS EVER!

Dean Ottley Building Contractors is not only the only building company I would use on the Island, they're the best I've ever used. This is for a number of reasons. Firstly, the standard of their work is outstanding. Both Dean himself and the sub-contractors he uses are absolutely first-class craftsmen whose work is always beyond criticism. Second, their customer service is second to none. Dean does exactly what he says he will do, in the time he says he'll do it, at the price he says he'll do it at, and he and his sub-contractors are absolutely charming. They are always on time, well-organised and self-contained and leave the working area immaculately clean and tidy. I have used Dean now for many building jobs both relatively small and quite significant and these things have always been true. He knows exactly what he's doing and consults as he goes along so there are no surprises. Most recently he transformed a bedroom by installing an ensuite and I'm delighted with it.

Dean project managed the entire build from start to finish, engaging with us, the architect, building control, suppliers etc problem solving and overcoming any issues promptly and appropriately, always keeping us informed. Dean and 'H' were always mindful that this was our home and kept disruption down to a minimum. We would highly recommend Dean and any of his trades people to anyone looking to extend, alter, renovate. Their work has exceeded our expectations and we now have an amazing space as a result. Front Porch & Side Extension

Dean Ottley Building Contractors have just completed a side extension comprising of an ensuite bathroom and dressing room also a front porch which we are extremely pleased with. The work was completed on time and to budget and Dean managed to source materials even though there were shortages and delays due to Covid. Dean kept us informed every day as to what they were working on and discussed any problems or queries he had. Dean and his team are very professional and take a pride in their work which is top quality while also keeping things clean and tidy, we would not hesitate to recommend them and would definitely invite them back to do any work in the future.

Dean has just completed a 13 week project to demolish and rebuild an extension, fit our kitchen including flooring, undertake ground floor alterations which included converting our old kitchen into a downstairs shower room, creating a utility room, reconfiguring doors, windows and decorating to create an exceptional space for us. From the initial contact through to completion. Dean and his trades people are the epitome of professionalism and the quality of their workmanship is outstanding.

Dean was keen to ensure that I was happy with every aspect of the work, whether it was to do with the foundations (I knew nothing ...) to the positioning of light fittings (which I couldn't easily decide ...). He communicates very well and is always ready to answer questions patiently, explain options and give advice, all with good humour. Each of his 'team' are excellent workmen who take pride in their work and who are reliable, considerate and totally trustworthy. All pricing and invoicing was done in a highly professional manner.

Having been extremely satisfied with Dean's work back in 2017 at my 2 bedroomed Victorian cottage home (upgrading a small utility room and fitting a new kitchen), I looked no further when I wanted more building work done. In the summer of 2019 I asked Dean's advice on a possible extension. He put me in touch with an architect who proposed replacing an old conservatory with a larger room opening out onto the garden by extending out to the side of the house, knocking through into the existing dining room and incorporating a store room. I had no hesitation in asking Dean to make this a reality and he helped me at all stages, including applying for the various permissions.

The work started on schedule in early February 2020. No-one could have anticipated that a lockdown would soon be in place and that a 3 month project would last for almost 6 months! Dean worked extremely hard to source materials and to keep the work going. But from the initial excavations to the final flooring, I always had confidence that the end result would be fantastic - and it is. I am thrilled with all the improvements that have been made, and I appreciated being able to include some 'extras' as the project evolved such as a paved patio and side gate, a revamped staircase and extra cupboards.

“Dean has just completed the refurbishment of our cottage in Ryde. The work included the removal of an internal wall, structural preparation for 4 metre bi-fold doors, installation of new kitchen and bathroom, flooring and redecoration throughout. We moved out for 5 weeks while the work was being carried out during which time Dean kept us informed on a daily basis as the work progressed, consulting and advising on several improvements to the original spec. There was an excellent working atmosphere between Dean and all the various specialist trades involved with Dean carrying out many of the tasks himself. The considerable quantity of old materials, original sanitary fittings, flooring etc. was cleared away on a regular basis and Dean always arrived to start work at the time he had previously advised. We are very pleased with the quality and finish of the completed work and would highly recommend his building services."

“ Dean Ottley Building Contractors Ltd just recently built an extension for us, which was a bedroom with a pitched roof. The job was completed on time and on budget. Dean and his team all worked well and performed to the highest standard. From the initial assesment to completion, Dean always kept us well informed of what was happening. We wanted several deviations and additions from the initial plans and Dean was very happy to include these at a reasonable price. We would certainly use Dean again and would not hesitate to recommend him to a friend."

Dean carried out much of the work himself, and organised his team and subcontractors as necessary for specialist items. He ordered materials and arranged deliveries to suit the progress of the work, and these were stored on our drive and in the rear garden. He fitted out a temporary garden shed as a toilet for the workmen. He widened our gateway to allow sufficient room for machinery to get in. On completion, he reinstated a double gate to our requirements, which included enough space underneath for our three-legged cat to squeeze through. Throughout the work, Dean kept us informed of his tasks for the next few days ahead, so that we could continue to live at home without too much disruption.

We are very happy to recommend Dean, who performed the work to a good standard to suit our particular requirements. He had a friendly, helpful attitude, kept the site clean and tidy as far as possible, and provided good value for money."
